The National Emergency Medical Services Information System Technical Assistance Center (NEMSIS TAC) today announced the availability of the 2022 Public-Release Research Dataset, the largest publicly available dataset of emergency medical service activations in the United States.

Those interested in requesting a copy of the 2022 Public-Release Research Dataset can contact the NEMSIS TAC and fill out a request form here https://nemsis.org/using-ems-data/request-research-data. A password-protected USB drive containing the dataset and supporting materials will be sent via postal service.

The Non-Fatal Opioid Overdose Tracker is now available for public use!

The first-of-its-kind data dashboard, which was developed for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) using national EMS data, will help policymakers and service providers target responses to the overdose epidemic and save more lives.

This information will help first responders identify trends and patterns of overdoses so they can direct prevention strategies more effectively.

“This dashboard puts data to work, strengthening our ability to save lives and fight back against the opioid crisis,” said Ann Carlson, Acting Administrator of NHTSA.

The Biden Administration’s National Drug Control Strategy calls for developing and strengthening the nation’s data systems to reach people at-risk of an overdose, and expand access to treatment for substance use disorder and high-impact harm reduction interventions like naloxone.

The dataset includes 48,982,990 EMS activations submitted by 13,949 EMS agencies servicing 53 states and territories. As discussed during v3 Implementation Calls and in NASEMSO Director and Data Managers meetings, the NEMSIS TAC is providing a letter from Dr. Jon Krohmer, Director of NHTSA’s Office of EMS, regarding timely data submissions.

The value of and demand for EMS data has moved beyond just research and well into “public health surveillance, responsive resource allocation, the evaluation of innovative payment models, and the creation of novel evidence-based EMS delivery systems.” This can only be accomplished if EMS patient care reports are completed and submitted in a timely manner.

Many states/territories already require data submission within 24 hours of closing the call. For those who aren’t there yet, please share this request with your state/territory offices of EMS, EMS agencies, software developers, and legislators that impact rules and implementation of submission requirements.
